Attack on Gov Zulum’s convoy an isolated incident —Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has reacted to the attack on the convoy of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday.

Army Spokesman, Sagir Musa, in a statement on Thursday said that the attack on Governor Zulum’s convoy in Baga was an isolated incident.

He further stated that earlier, Zulum had visited Commander 19 Brigade at the Nigerian Army Super Camp where he was briefed on the security situation.

Musa noted that details of the incident were still “sketchy” while also announced that investigation has commenced while efforts are ongoing to comb the area, “with a view to track down and deal decisively with the attackers.”

According to him, normalcy had been restored in Baga, “With socio-economic activities picking up” while also assuring Nigerians that the incident be interrogated to forestall future reoccurrence.

“The military will continue to discharge its responsibilities professionally and respect fundamental human rights,” Musa added.

Earlier Governor Zulum had cast aspersions over the commitment of the Nigerian Army to clear insurgents from Baga town in Kukawa local government area of the state.

Governor Zulum who made the disclosure on Thursday while flagging off the reopening of Monguno Baga highway to motorists after two years of closure, expressed his displeasure following an assault on his convoy by suspected members of the Boko Haram group on his way from Baga.

According to him, his convoy was attacked in Baga town is approximately 196 km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, despite the huge number of military presence in mile 4, which is only 4km away from Baga.
