Bayelsa govt gives update on index case of COVID-19

The Bayelsa State government has confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in the state.

Dr. Inodu Akpoku, the Chairman, Bayelsa COVID-19 Task Force implementation Committee, on Monday, confirmed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the state had prepared well to handle the situation, hence no cause for alarm.

Akpoku disclosed that the affected woman had been quarantined at the isolation centre located at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

“We have recorded one case, and she is a woman. She has been moved to the isolation centre at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH) at Okolobiri in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

“There is absolutely no need for panic because the Bayelsa government is adequately prepared for this.

“We have no fewer than three isolation centres and well-trained medical professionals to tackle the pandemic.”

The Chairman further begged Bayelsa residents to make use of face masks and observe protocols put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

He added that further details on the case would be made public at a later time.

DAILY POST recalls that the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, on Sunday confirmed first case of Coronavirus in Bayelsa State as the number of cases now stands at 1,273 in Nigeria.
