FCT lifts ban on market operations amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has lifted the ban earlier placed on market operations in Abuja which was ordered to stem the spread of the dreaded COVID-19 virus.

This was revealed on Wednesday by the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, in a statement issued on his behalf by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, in Abuja.

The statement informed of the lifting of the ban placed on market operations from three to seven days a week, effective from July 30, 2020, and also added that the markets would open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

According to Ogunleye, the decision was reached at a virtual meeting between members of the FCT COVID-19 Response Team, senior members of the administration and members of the Coalition of FCT Market Chairmen.

“Access to the markets and operations within the markets will only be permitted with the wearing of face mask and adherence to other guidelines such as hand washing and maintenance of physical distancing.”

The permanent secretary tested positive two weeks ago and was admitted in one of the isolation centres in Abuja, though he was asymptomatic.
