Ogun: Suspected COVID-19 patient dies in transit, abandoned with relative by roadside [VIDEO]

A suspected COVID-19 patient has died inside a car that was conveying him along Abeokuta-Sagamu road.

The Ogun State Police have confirmed the incident to DAILY POST.

According to a video that surfaced online on Tuesday, the lifeless body of the patient was seen being held by a relative, with whom he was travelling.

It was learnt that the driver conveying them reportedly dumped the corpse and the person accompanying him immediately he noticed he was no more breathing.

It could not be immediately confirmed whether or not the man died of COVID-19.

However, the man who was seen with the corpse said he had travelled to Cotonou, in Benin Republic recently and returned to Nigeria.

The young man, who identified himself as Alex, said the man started feeling sick after he returned from Benin Republic to Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State.

According to Alex, the deceased was a citizen of Benin Republic.

He informed that they were both coming from Sagamu, going to Owode, when the incident happened.

He said he was taking him to his family members in Owode.

On how they were able to beat all security arrangements in travelling from Sagamu to Abeokuta despite the ongoing lockdown in Ogun State, Adex said it was an ‘officer’ who gave them a ride from Sagamu to Abeokuta.

However, when the said ‘officer’ noticed that the man had died in his car, he dropped them by the roadside and ran away.

Contacted, the Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told DAILY POST that the police have visited the scene.

“We have contacted the Ogun State Ministry of Health, they have taken the corpse away with the other guy and they have decontaminated the area.

“We don’t know the cause of the death anyway; in case if it is COVID-19, they have gone to decontaminate the place,” Oyeyemi told DAILY POST.
